our mission
The Hyde Family Foundations work to make Memphis a competitive and caring city with a bold, confident vision for the future. This is done through active leadership and proactive, initiative-driven grantmaking that targets public/private partnerships that are catalysts for progress.

To achieve this, we concentrate on three core areas:

K-12 Education Reform
Every child in Memphis City Schools - the 18th largest district in the U.S. with about 120,000 students - deserves a high-quality education. In pursuit of this goal, we look for innovative strategies to expand quality options for students, to systemically stimulate positive change in public education, and to broaden the conversation about how to support excellent public education in Memphis.

Positioning Memphis
Memphis has distinctive assets - cultural, historical, and physical - that can be competitive advantages in the global economy. We identify these assets and develop them into first-rate amenities of national significance for our city. In using these unique physical and creative qualities, we cultivate a vibrant city abundant in ideas and talent.

Healthy Neighborhoods
The hollowing out of a city's urban core is a problem that fuels sprawl, reinforces the cycle of poverty, and threatens communities. In supporting the redevelopment of healthy neighborhoods, we act as catalysts for change by bringing together diverse stakeholder groups, developing creative public-private partnerships to leverage our philanthropic investments, and focusing our resources on areas where we have already made significant commitments. Given this search for synergy across core focus areas, virtually all of our grantmaking in healthy neighborhoods is proactive in nature.
